What is chiropractic?
Discovered in 1895 by Davenport,
Iowa resident Dr. D.D. Palmer, chiropractic is
based on the scientific fact that every function
of the human body is controlled by the brain via
signals through the nervous system. When interference
with these signals occurs, doctors of chiropractic
believe that ill health, lowered resistance to
diseases, and symptoms can occur. Link to Palmer
College of Chiropractic for further info. www.palmer.edu

2.
How does chiropractic work?
The purpose of chiropractic
treatment is to restore normal joint function,
alignment and to remove interference of the nervous
system. Doctors of chiropractic conduct a detailed
consultation and thorough spinal examination,
consisting of various tests, to arrive at a proper
diagnosis and treatment recommendation. Most forms
of treatment are associated with gentle corrections
of the spine and/or extremities and are called
“adjustments”.

3.
What is a chiropractic subluxation?
A misalignment or malfunction
of one or more spinal vertebrae or extremities
which causes nerve pressure or irritation and
can affect the proper function of any part of
the body, pain is not always a finding.

4.
What is an adjustment?
The gentle correction of
a subluxation by hand or device to relieve the
pressure on the nerves and thereby normalize proper
function and optimize health.

5.
What are the main causes of subluxations?
1. (Physical Traumas) such
as slips, falls, whiplash, repetitive motions,
bad posture, back packs, and birth traumas (delivery,
forceps, suction); 2. (Emotional Stress) such
as grief, anger, fear and depression; 3. (Chemical
Imbalance) such as increased alcohol use, drugs,
environmental issues and poor diet can cause subluxations.

6.
Are chiropractic adjustments safe?
Yes. A New Zealand government
study noted that adjustments are “remarkably
safe.” Chiropractic care enjoys an excellent
success record. A thorough initial evaluation
can identify the rare few for whom chiropractic
care might be unsuited.

7.
Will the adjustments hurt?
Generally speaking most chiropractic
adjustments are painless. Depending on the severity
and the length of time you have had your condition
there may be some minor soreness following an
adjustment. This is usually associated with increased
muscle movement and release of residual chemical
waste products, such as lactic acid. (Very similar
to the soreness associated following an exercise
workout.) This is normal. Do not worry.

8.
Can I adjust myself?
No. Some people can make
their joints “pop” and think they've
made an adjustment. Wrong! Damage can occur by
“self manipulating” a joint with weakened
muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific
and require the skill of a professionally trained
doctor of chiropractic to administer. Even your
chiropractic doctor must consult a colleague to
personally benefit from chiropractic care.

9.
Why are chiropractic x-rays needed?
Depending on your particular
problem, x-rays may be recommended. X-rays help
to identify a history of spinal stresses and injuries,
confirm exam findings, as well as reveal degenerative
conditions (disc and joints), all of which might
prevent or delay your recovery. X-rays also help
to make our adjustments and the amount of treatments
prescribed more precise. Some forms of diseases
are also detected with x-ray. If there are genetic
trends in your family, x-rays can be helpful in
their identification.

10.
What if I do not respond to chiropractic?
The consultation and examination
are necessary to determine if chiropractic can
help your condition. If not, you will be referred
to another specialist who may be able to help.
In any event, your health and happiness are our
primary goal.

What happens if I have a work injury*?
If you have a work related
injury you will need to notify your employer or
a supervisor as soon as possible. They will inform
you of your options, whether it be to seek help
with your own personal doctor or a doctor or clinic
that is selected by the employer.
As of 2004 the Worker’s
Compensation Laws have been revised and significant
changes have been implemented. If you are not
familiar with these revisions, either contact
your local Worker’s Compensation office
or a Worker’s Compensation attorney. Under
the new laws pain alone does not constitute necessity
for treatment. Functional loss (inability to perform
certain tasks, etc.) is the key component in determining
the need and length of treatment.

12.
Can I have a subluxation if I don’t have
any pain?
Yes. Most of the time pain
is not one of the first symptoms you will experience
when something is wrong with your health. Many
times it might actually be the last thing that
will notify you of a problem. Therefore, you can
have subluxations and not even know it. Like the
early stages of tooth decay, subluxations can
be present before warning signs appear. A review
of your history and a thorough spinal examination
can show the location and severity of subluxations
you may have. Don’t delay…get checked!

13.
When should I consult with a doctor of chiropractic?
Anytime! You don’t
have to feel pain to experience the benefits of
chiropractic. You may have been involved in many
traumas during your life such as birth, falls,
sports injuries, auto accidents, repetitive traumas
or just plain normal activities of daily living.
Any one or more of these traumas can have an influence
on one's health and whether or not a subluxation
exists. To properly evaluate for subluxation contact
a doctor of chiropractic.

14.
Can I have chiropractic care after a previous
back surgery or if I have osteoporosis?
Yes to both questions. Your
doctor will avoid the surgically altered area
of your spine. Surgery often causes hypermobility
and decay above or below the involved level. These
areas will be the focus of your chiropractic care.
If you have osteoporosis, there are many modified
ways to adjust the spine. The method selected
with all patients is tailored to best suit your
age, size and condition.
